Dr. Kiefer is a University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine alumna, earning her DVM in 2006. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, a surgical internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Hospital, and a combined PhD and surgery residency at her alma mater. After residency, she remained at the University of Minnesota for several years as an assistant professor of small animal surgery. During this time, she earned certification as a canine rehabilitation practitioner, and achieved board certification in sports medicine and rehabilitation in addition to surgery.
Her clinical specialties and interests include regenerative medicine, minimally invasive surgery, polytraumas, and complex emergency surgeries. In addition, she is Fear Free-trained.
Outside the hospital setting, Dr. Kiefer serves as a trail veterinarian for dog sled races across the country, fosters puppies, and volunteers with animal welfare-related nonprofits. She’s also founder of VetSSMART, an organization that supports the veterinary profession, and the Mourning Paws Project, which provides support services for pet loss and associated grief. She’s a devotee of tea, chocolate, Minnesota, the outdoors, and her personal dog pack.
